In Roman times brides wore blue to symbolize love, fidelity and modesty while Christian brides may have chosen blue as the Virgin Mary was depicted in blue so came the association of blue = purity. A popular phrase during the nineteenth century was “Marry in blue, lover be true” which may explain why many brides wore blue on their wedding day. Queen Victoria wore a white satin gown in 1840 when she married Prince Albert and it is said that from then on brides followed suit and wore white. Today just about anything goes as brides have the freedom to wear what they choose. Even the most modern bride will still adhere to at least the first four lucky charms.
